Propaganda Information

Here is a collection of information about making a propaganda poster.  It includes links about/sample of propaganda, page layout, and fonts. I am not advocating any of the ideas espoused by this propaganda, I am just linking to it for the sake of examples. At this point in time, Adobe InDesign is the most popular page layout application followed by Quark Xpress; both commercial products. You can choose to use Scribus instead if you would like. Scribus is a free/opensource page layout application available from scribus.net.

Video and Audio mashups with public domain materials

There is a ton of free public domain video and audio available online. Archive.org is a great place to start with its vast collection of both video and audio clips. Many are available in multiple formats.
Project for Digital Foundations class:
Video/Audio mashup
For this project you will create a video/audio mashup of not less than 3 minutes. Find public domain video or bring in video clips that you made to edit and mix using iMovie. Archive.org is a great source for public domain video. Download the Quicktime version of the files if available, otherwise the MPEG version of the file.
Find public domain audio to use. Archive.org also has a ton of audio clips. You can also take the audio from public domain videos. Or make your own audio from your own recordings or within Garageband.
For Monday, you should have the video and audio clips that you want to use. We will spend Monday working on the project in class. This a a creative/art piece. It can be really nutty.

Do you know where your backup is?

Do you have all your data backed up? Is it a current backup? Is it a complete backup? Haven't you lost dat at some point in your life? I know you have......
At minimum you should have all the data on your computer backed up. This is to say, you should have a complete copy of all the data on your computer that you care about. There are a variety of ways to do this. You can choose to use an external hard drive hooked up via USB, firewire, or eSATA. You can also back up your data over a network. This can be saved over your local network or remotely on a server. Ideally, you should have an offsite copy of your data. This is to say that it is not on premises. This way, if the worst should happen, a fire or a flood, then your data will still be safe. Online backup has a ton of advantages. It is offsite and if you are using a reputable service, then they are keeping multiple copies of the data at multiple locations. The major drawback of online backup services are that the initial backup of your system can take a very long time. A few of the services offer an initial backup via an external hard drive. Then all subsequent backups are performed online. Mozy.com and a number of other online backup services offer a free 2GB service so that you can back up some data and get a feel for how it works.

NEW BLOG SETUP!!

I just integrated my blogspot (Google's www.blogger.com) blog into my existing website! This will allow me to much more readily update my blog. Much, much easier. Still a few little styling things to figure out, but my blog is now hosted by my server rather than Google's. Now, you can leave me comments!

If you want to do the same with your website, below are some helpful links. Basically, you set up the blog to be hosted on your server. Then you stylize your blog's template with CSS to take on the same look and navigation of your existing website. This will take some trial an error in determining which CSS you can modify without messing up the necessary CSS of the blog. Before you begin, please note that your web host must support ftp file transfer.

I just came across this about.com tutorial. Generally about.com tutorials are quite good.
http://personalweb.about.com/od/easyblogsandwebpages/ss/bloggeronsite.htm

Free Alternative Image Editing Programs

Without going into the many reasons to explore alternative Image Editing Programs, I have created a list of programs that I feel are worth checking out. In the case of all these programs, they are free. As more people use the programs, the developers have greater incentive to continue their development. So, if you like them be sure to spread the word.
Free Photo Editing alternatives:
GIMP – from the official site, “GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.” www.Gimp.org
GIMPSHOP – a distribution of GIMP with an interface that is designed to emulate that of Photoshop http://www.gimpshop.com/
paint.net – Windows only photo editing program http://www.paint.net/
CinePaint – Linux only photo editing program – supports up to 32 bits per channelhttp://www.cinepaint.org/
Free Digital Painting alternatives: ArtWeaver http://www.artweaver.de/
Art Rage 2.5 http://www.ambientdesign.com
Pixarra Twisted Brush http://www.pixarra.com
Free Vector Imaging alternative Inkscape http://www.inkscape.org
Scribus – free distributed page layout application http://www.scribus.net
Raw Therapee – a full featured stand alone RAW file convertor powered by Dave Coffin’s dcrawhttp://www.rawtherapee.com
UFRaw - Unidentified Flying Raw – a full featured standalone and GIMP plugin RAW convertor powered by Dave Coffin’s dcraw http://ufraw.sourceforge.net
Picassa - Google's free image editor - Its editing features are limited, but it shines as a poor man's data asset management application. It creates and saves thumbnails of all your images to facilitate their location. Also a really simple way of getting a gallery of images online if you use the Web Gallery feature which is also free up to a certain amount of space. It also supports RAW files, again via Dave Coffin’s dcraw http://picasa.google.com/
